On this page, you can explore ten key objects which are linked to the 1916 Easter Rising. Click on the object image on the map or use the scroll down arrow below. You will find military items and documents, which were used by the rebels in 1916, as well as everyday objects such as Terence Simpson’s bicycle.

Each object page features a short description of the object and, at the bottom, a link to related objects in the National Museum’s Easter Week and Historical collections. You can see most of the objects on display in the Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising and in the Soldiers & Chiefs exhibitions at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History.

Terence Simpson’s Bicycle

On Easter Monday, 24th April, Terence Simpson left Drumcondra in South Dublin and rode this bicycle to St Stephen’s Green in Dublin’s city centre.

This is one of three original copies of the Proclamation of Irish Independence, which are in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland.

This green flag with the words IRISH REPUBLIC painted on both sides was hoisted by the rebels over the General Post Office in Dublin on Easter Monday, 24th April.

Thomas Clarke’s Mauser Rifle

Thomas Clarke’s Mauser Rifle

This Mauser Rifle belonged to Thomas Clarke (1857-1916, b. on the Isle of Wright). It was one of the first rifles offloaded at Howth Pier as part of the Howth Gun Running in July 1914.

Memorial Card

Memorial Card

This memorial card shows a photograph of Charles Darcy who died on 24th April 1916, the first day of the Easter Rising. As a member of the Irish Citizen Army, he had been part of the attempted invasion on Dublin Castle on Easter Monday.

Iodine Bottles

Iodine Bottles

Medical doctor Kathleen Lynn (1874 – 1955) used iodine from these glass bottles to disinfect the wounds of insurgents during the Easter Rising. She was a Captain in the Irish Citizen Army and based in Dublin’s City Hall.

Glass Bottle

This melted glass bottle was picked up in the General Post Office (GPO) after the Rising and illustrates how intense the fires were in some part of the city during Easter Week. There are particles of mortar imbedded in the glass.

Surrender Note

On Saturday, 29th of April, Patrick Pearse gave the order to surrender. This is one of four surrender notes, which Patrick Pearse wrote after his arrest.

These are the charred remains of a green Irish flag which Molly O’Reilly, a young teenager, raised over Liberty Hall in Dublin on Easter Sunday 1916.
