Ordú Géillte

Order to surrender given to the Enniscorthy Volunteers by P.H. Pearse, 30th April 1916. On Saturday, 29th of April, Patrick Pearse gave the order to surrender. This is one of four surrender notes, which Patrick Pearse wrote after his arrest. His orders for surrender were sent to outlying garrisons in Dublin and County Wexford, which had not surrendered by late Saturday, 29th April, or Sunday, 30th April, of Easter week.

The surrender notes have slight variations. In this note Patrick Pearse wrote in longhand and ink in Arbour Hill Detention Barracks

“In order to prevent the slaughter of unarmed people and in the hope of saving the lives of our followers, the members of the Provisional Government present at Headquarters agreed last night to an unconditional surrender, and Commandants or commanding officers of districts will order their men to lay down arms or disband.”

The note is signed “P.H. Pearse 30th April 1916”.
