Toffee axe thrown by looter at the hat of a Mr. Daly in Sackville Street.

Toffee axes such as this were used to break smaller pieces off hard sweets such as toffee, which is made from caramelised sugar and butter. The head of the axe has an axe blade on one side and a hammer on the opposite side. Stamped on its side is "C.W.S. Pure Toffee" and “Crumpsall”, the name of a British toffee and biscuit factory. In 1916 this toffee axe was thrown by a looter at the hard hat of a Mr. Daly who happened to be in Sackville Street. He was the father of the person who later donated the toffee axe to the National Museum.
