Bratach Chomplacht B, Na Fianna Éireann

This flag was designed by Cornelius Colbert in 1915 for the Irish youth movement Na Fianna Éireann (Warriors of Ireland). It shows a yellow rayed sunburst on the front and back, the sunburst on the front has “Company B” enclosed. Cornelius (‘Conn’) Colbert (1888-1916, b. in Castlemahon, Co. Limerick) fought at the Jameson’s Distillery and Marrowbone Lane garrison during the Easter Rising. He was shot by firing squad on 8th May 1916. Before he was executed, he wrote ten letters to family and friends, including the lines to his sister Lila “(…) Perhaps I’d never get the chance of knowing when I was to die again and so I’ll try and die well (…).” Some of the last letters which the rebels wrote before they were executed are on display in the Proclaiming a Republic exhibition.
