British Army Recruitment Poster, World War One

During World War One recruitment posters such as this would have been put up in Ireland. This poster was issued by the British Army in 1914 and reads “HALT! Who goes there? IF YOU ARE A FRIEND JOIN AN IRISH REGIMENT AND HELP THE BRAVE IRISH LADS AT THE FRONT”, trying to convince Irish people to join the British Army. Over 200,000 Irish men fought in the British Army during the First World War. They joined for different reasons. Some believed Ireland would get Home Rule if they helped in the British war effort. Others joined because it was a family tradition to join the British Army or for adventure. Many Irish men joined for economic reasons – to guarantee a regular income for their families.

You can find out more about Irish involvement in World War One in the Recovered Voices and Soldiers & Chiefs exhibitions.
