Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Roll of Honour the definitive list of people who participated in the 1916 Rising?

The Roll of Honour is not a definitive list. Many people who participated in the Rising did not sign the Roll on its creation in 1936. You can learn more about the creation of the list in Background to the Roll of Honour of 1916 here.

Are there other versions of the Roll of Honour?

You will find many lists called the Roll of Honour, both printed and online, from many different sources and commemorating different groups over different time periods. The Roll of Honour held by the NMI is the only list created by a committee, and was designed to include members of all Dublin garrisons who saw service during Easter Week, 1916.

Is there a complete list?

There is currently no complete list. However, the digitization of the Military Service Pension files held in the Military Archives is leading us closer to compiling a definitive list of participants.

Are there ambiguities in the names?

The signatories of the Roll may have signed their name in Irish or English, spelled a name differently then how it is currently spelled, or used their maiden or married name. If you have difficulties finding a name it is advised that you try different spellings, or search the Roll’s pages.

Are the names fully deciphered?

Due to the difficulty in interpreting some signatures on the Roll, not all the names are fully deciphered. If you have difficulties finding a name it is advised that you try different spellings, or search the Roll’s pages.

Can a name be added, edited or removed from the Roll of Honour?

It is recognized that the Roll of Honour is not a complete listing of participants in the 1916 Rising. However, it is a historical document and can therefore not be altered in any way.

Is the Roll of Honour on display in the National Museum of Ireland galleries?

The Roll of Honour is a handwritten document and is sensitive to light damage. Even a low light level can, over a length of time, cause fading to the signatures which cannot be reversed. Therefore the Roll of Honour cannot be displayed in a gallery setting.
