Photograph of Surrender

This photograph shows General Lowe and beside him his son John (near camera, at front). On the right-hand side stands Patrick Pearse and behind him Elizabeth O’Farrell who escorted Pearse to the top of Moore Street where they surrendered. There has been some debate about this photograph, as copies exist on which the feet and garment belonging to Elizabeth O’Farrell are not visible. Suggestions have been made that republicans had airbrushed Elizabeth O’Farrell, who had acted as a nurse during the Rising, out of the picture afterwards. However, there were also commemorative brochures issued in 1916 by The Irish Times and other groups that illustrate the ‘cleaned up’ version, suggesting that it is far more likely to have been the work of a contemporary photographer or editor, attempting to clean up the image, which is of fairly poor quality.
