Conradh na Gaeilge Póstaer

Poster designed by Sarah Trench and published by the Gaelic League, c.1920. This poster was designed by Sarah Trench (Sadhbh Ní Trinnseach) and published by the Gaelic League in c.1920. The original copy was produced on brown paper in crayons and was hung for a long time in the Gaelic League office at 25, Parnell Square, Dublin.

The design reflects the longing for an independent Ireland, symbolised by the figure on the left (‘Éire’ or Hibernia). She holds reins in her hands, controlling Irish ports and trade. In her right hand she holds a pike, which is reminiscent of the Irish rebellion of 1798 when pikes where used to fight for Irish independence. Behind this proud and tall looking figure we see an outline of the island of Ireland.

Ireland under British rule is symbolised on the right-hand side of the poster. We can see a weak, impoverished figure, which is shackled and wrapped in the British flag (Union Jack). She is opening one hand as a sign of dependency on Britain. The map behind this figure represents the Irish East coast. Black lines lead further east from the ports, symbolising that they are controlled by Britain.
